The Chai Story

On Sunday, June 22, 2008 my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws Inc, produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0 4566320227 9)

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

(photo taken of ball after vet cut away portions in order to dislodge chai's tongue)

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball removed. Because the size of the opening on the ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in order to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth. Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed overnight for any changes.

By the following morning Chai’s tongue had swollen even more.

He was taken to his regular vet, Dr. Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved. On June 26, 2008 Chai had his tongue amputated.

He was kept in after-care for an additional three days. On Sunday June 29th I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed.

(This is video of Chai showing the pain level that he had for the first three days despite being on heavy doses of pain medication)

On the way home from the vet we stopped at Petland Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also gave me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet.

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5000.00 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.

Also - I am Chai’s sole caretaker and the regime required to care for him following his surgery has forced me to lose a great deal of business. I am a hair stylist and my salon is in my home. Given that Chai needs constant attention, and given that he has been wailing in pain, I have not been able to see clients.

Additionally, I now have to re-teach my dog to eat, drink and adjust to life without his tongue. Just walking him requires about 30min twice a day and we only make it three blocks. Feeding him takes me about 90 minutes twice a day and for at least this first week he is not to be unattended for more than 20 minutes at time.

The following is a link to an animal treatment clinic that has also documented the same injury to a Shepard mix.

I sent this information along with the reference to Petunia the french bulldog to Four Paws Inc, and it is their position that there just aren't enough instances to do anything about this. I told their Insurance company's case manager that was not a good enough excuse, It was inferred that my dogs value wasn't much and that his pain and suffering don't count as he is just a piece of property.

This should never happen to another animal again!
I'M CALLING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL BOYCOTT OF ALL FOUR PAWS PRODUCTS UNTIL THIS PRODUCT IS RECALLED. We need your help, please take the time to make your voice heard.

Please copy/paste the following into the body of your email in support of this boycott and send it to the address below to let Allen Simon the CEO of four paws know your stand;

Mr. Allen Simon,

I am in support of a boycott of your company until you recall the product pimple ball with bell,
as it is designed in such a way that irreparable damage can be caused by its use.

I am spreading the word to my friends and family but will also be asking my dog's daycare and vet to post a notice. Plus, I'm certainly writing that CEO. One injured dog is one too many!! Your dog is an absolute doll and my heart broke watching his struggle. You're doing a tremendous job caring for him. The world could use more people like you.

No more Four Paws for me - not only until this product is recalled, but until I learn that Four Paws has picked up all of your vet bills. at the very least.

Elaine said...

I know this may sound silly but is there any sort of prosthesis that can be attached to Chai's tongue to help him lap up water or eat? So sad. I too will be spreading the word so that no one buys Four Paws products.

A couple suggestions:

1. Show a picture of the ball (before it was cut to remove tongue by vet) with the little hole. There are some on the fourpaws website: http://www.fourpaws.com/products/dogs/toys/balls.php?startPos=view_all

2. Definitely contact fourpaws. Sit down with an attorney and figure out what you need from them to make you & dog "whole" or as close as possible. Formulate some kind of demand letter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demand_letter
This will probably mean asking fourpaws to pull dangerous products so no more dogs are hurt. Implement some better type of R&D and testing for safety, perhaps using a recognized 3rd party tester. Finally, you should be financially compensated for the injuries to dog and loss of your time and perhaps a "loss of consortium" theory for the damage to the quality of the relationship with your dog.

3. Have they refuse to deal with you? Maybe they would like to get a bad product off the market as much as you. It's not right to implement a boycott without having contacted the company. And why boycott all products? The first thing is to determine which toys are dangerous and remove those. Working with the company will save more dogs than a grass-roots boycott. Boycotting "all products" may be an appropriate move to punish the company if they do not respond to you. Give them a chance to do the right thing.

Daniel,

i sent an email to Allen Simon, CEO of Four Paws and i fully intend to boycott this company until something is done. my dog is lucky in that i never bought him this toy. i once considered buying it for him but decided on a tug-o-war rope (which is now his favorite toy) instead and i'm glad i did. i wish Chai and the other dogs that have been harmed by this toy were as lucky as my dog. my tears fall for those poor babies!

fergus the dog said...

And now for a different view: Call out the lawyers. Sue the bastards that made a rubber ball. Cut a ball in half and you have two suction cups. Wonder if that hole in the ball ever contained treats? Dogs will be dogs even when unsupervised. Once knew a dog who got his head stuck in a large pickle jar can't remember if the owner sued the pickle company.

Jason said...

Daniel this is so tragic. The videos make my heart ache. Chai is a loving member of your family, not a line item on some cost/benefit analysis. Four Paws will be hearing from me.

Oh My Gosh! The poor baby! I cried as I watched him in pain. This is so heartbreaking. Then I got so mad when they said that Chai was just a piece of property. Much Love sent for dear Chai, and I will be spreading the word!

This is terrible - you should start a free public petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/ to send to the company to let them know how many people will be boycotting their products!

My letter to 4 paws: Your company slogan is "a brand you can trust". I ask you to make the decisions and take the actions necessary to uphold this statement.

I am in support of a boycott of all Four Paws toys until the The Pimple Ball with Bell and any other similar items that have proven dangerous to pets are recalled. I also expect Four Paws reimburse all of the vet bills that have occurred for the poor poor pet owners who have watched their animals suffer so! A dog now living without a tongue? My gosh that is not the result of a product from "a brand you can trust".

I understand that some mistakes can not easily be forseen. I give your company that, but now that this defect is obvious. Action must be taken.

I have 6 dogs which have many toys. Until this is resolved I will not buy them four paws toys. I also work with a very active rescue group. I am passing this on to all of those volunteers and suggesting they do the same.

Mistakes happen -- but fix this one now!

Here's what I wrote:

Recently, a friend of mine’s dog, Chai, severely injured his tongue while playing with your product. The tongue has had to be amputated. Upon contacting your company, my friend was told that there weren’t enough instances of injuries like Chai’s to necessitate removal of the toy from your list of products (despite the fact that other similar injuries from the same toy have been documented). In discussing the injury with my friend, your company insinuating that Chai’s value wasn’t much and that his pain and suffering and subsequent amputation of his tongue didn’t count, since the dog is just a piece of property.

My husband and I do not have any dogs, we have cats. However, not only have I forwarded my friend’s story to EVERY single dog lover/owner I know, but I also will be boycotting your products for our cats. Unlike your company’s position on animals, our cats are not just a piece of property. They’re our family. They’re pain and suffering, as well as happiness and health, are our pain, suffering, happiness, and health. That an animal products company could take such a callous and lazy attitude towards animals and their welfare is disgusting to me.

Please remove this product from your line-up and put out a recall.

Thank you,
Katharine Horowitz

This is tragic ... I just sent an email and will spread the word. I have a blonde lab and can't imagine what I would do if this happened.

Have you thought of trying to help him drink by using one of those hamster/gerbil style water bottles? Like this one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11183&cmpid=08csegb&ref=3312&subref=AA&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=0016687000000
Maybe if it was mounted high enough it could work? Just a thought.

I hope that this site can spread awareness and prevent another dog from having to go through what Chai has. Best wishes in his recovery!

I am just horrified over what happened to Chai and it hurts my heart to think about it. Poor, poor Chai! All he was doing was being a dog and playing. I will absolutely send an email to the CEO, but will add a personal note with a strong admonishment for Four Paws lack of concern for dogs. The idea that they are not willing to take the balls off the market and replace them with new balls that have a second hole is most disturbing. This too I will say.

Wht is the prognosis for Chai? Will he ever be completely pain free and able to live a normal life again - granted he will have to eat differently. Can he still bark?

Before I write the CEO I would appreciate knowing the long term prognosis. Here is my name and my email if you get a chance to reply to my request.

Also, I will forward this information to everyone I know.

Forwarding your page to a large doggy email list.

I have an idea that might help Chai drink. Have you tried putting the bowl on the floor? I know you are trying to give it the angle to keep the water out of his nose, but dogs can learn to hold their breath. I have a girl who prefers to drink by sticking her whole muzzle in the water, up to her eyes, and I guess sort of sucking in the water. I guess it's genetic cus her dad did the same thing, but he stuck his head in to his ears! :) She CAN drink normally, but always seems disappointed if the water isn't deep enough for her to stick her face in. Maybe Chai could learn to drink that way.
One thing that might help is if you had him retrieve something from the bottom of the bowl, then when his face was in there maybe he'd figure out he could drink.
Just an idea.

The hamster bottle might work too. They make them in a dog size, and I've used them to put in a dog's crate so they can have water in there without playing in it. They normally lick it to get it to drip, but any touch will work.

Do not buy any dog toy with a hole that doesn't have a hole on the opposite side to prevent a vacuum. Kong did lots of research to make their toys safe that way. There's a company that cares about the animals' safety!

It was painful to see Chai in so much pain. I will definitely go home and rethink my dogs' toys and make sure they are safe. It might give some hope of where Chai might be one day. I'll let people know about the Four Paws ball and pray that one of God's creatures will feel better soon.

Mr. Allen Simon,

I am in support of a boycott of your company until you recall the product pimple ball with bell, as it is designed is such a way that irreparable damage can be caused by its use.

I will also boycott your company's products until you reimburse the veterinary and rehabilitative expenses (past, present and foreseeable in the future) incurred by the owner of Chai, the dog who had to have his tongue his tongue removed due to the vacuum created by your ball. It is absolutely appalling that you would dismiss your responsibility for this injury due to the low rate of incidents of such severity among users of this ball. If one in every 500,000 airline passengers were injured, they and their family members would still be entitled to compensation. And I don't find that figure persuasive anyway, as it's only logical that for every single report of a catastrophic injury you actually receive, there must be many more times that amount in lesser injuries and close calls that owners deem not worth reporting.

Referring the handling of this incident to the deadbeats at your insurance company is a very stupid and counterproductive choice. I hope it makes the guys in your PR and Marketing departments break out in a rash that won't heal until you do the right thing. The defective design of this ball in foreseeable usage of this ball is what caused the injury. It is only decent to accept responsibility and make this owner at least financially whole.

No amount of money could ever reimburse Chai's owner for the emotional distress she suffered in coping with the Chai's injury and the threat to his life -- and you could never reimburse Chai for the pain and suffering he has had to endure and will continue to endure now that he has such a catastrophic disability.

Why do corporations always have to reply with an across-the-board NO, even when your responsibility is obvious and undeniable? Just do the right thing: Recall this product and make Chai's owner financially whole.

Sincerely,

In all the years this product has been on the market, this is the first injury of this nature that we are aware of. Unfortunately, accidents sometimes happen. That’s why we recommend that dogs always be supervised when they are playing with any toy. We take great care in developing safe products for pets and their owners.

At this point we have identified the problem and are not shipping any more Pimple Balls. We have contacted customers that carry this product and have asked them to immediately return their inventory.

Thank you for your concern and feedback. Please know that we are in direct communication with the pet owner whose dog was injured. At Four Paws, happy pets and satisfied pet owners are our number one priority. Rest assured we will continue to work hard to deliver on our priority.

Sincerely,

Allen Simon

What a horrible chain of events you and your dog have had to endure. I also have a yellow lab mix and this story was so sad. I sent an email to all my dog loving family and friends to make them aware of this story and product. I also sent in my email to get the product discontinued. Best of luck to you and Chai.

My heart goes out to you and Chai. I hope that Chai will be able to eat and drink and get to be a happy dog again soon.

I have never heard of this toy but I will be checking out my local petsmart next time I am there and making sure its not part of their product line and also sending this on to everyone.

First of all, please give Chai a big kiss and hug from me for having to go through that horrible ordeal.

My name is Penny, I am the owner of the web site www.gimpydogs.com a free site to help owners of special needs dogs. I have posted an alert about these toys. Additionally, Four Paws is now sending out a form e-mail stating that they stand by their product, but are voluntarily recalling it and have notified their vendors. A google search finds at LEAST 22 stores that still have it on their site. We have people contacting these vendors to have them removed. We also have a form letter for people to send to pet stores and other vendors if the toys are found still for sale.

We have people cross posting about these toys and are doing what we can to ensure that others do not suffer as poor Chai has.

If we can help in any way, please contact me at gimpydogscom@gmail.com

This is a very sad story and show what terrible suffering Chai and his family have had to endure .

This product should be removed immediately and recalled. Any pet owners that have purchased this product should remove it immediately.
Chai has had to suffer great pain and will be effected for the rest of his life with a huge cost to his family also who will need to give him special attention. My heart goes out to you all.

I am sending loads of healing prayers to Chai and of course to all animals suffering from this kind of preventable tragedy. FOUR PAWS should have thought before hand but certainly they should act immediately to remove this and any other dangers!...This is horrible!..Thank God you are a loving and caring person who loves your baby!...Keep up the wonderful care. He knows you love him..He as all animals are so precious!..
I am writing the company!

I tried to find your email to cc you on mine that i sent to Four Paws. So I will include it here.

I would highly suggest that you contact all the breed and AKC clubs in your area, espically the Lab club of america and enlist their support as well. Should you need help finding this info, please contact me at aussieu@comcast.net and i'll be happy to assist.

Mr. Allen Simon,

I am in support of a boycott of your company until you recall the product pimple ball with bell,
as it is designed is such a way that irreparable damage can be caused by its use.

Additionally as a breeder and exhibitor of dogs, I will be sure to pass this information on to all my friends and to my kennel clubs that I am a member of. We will not be considering any Four Paws products for the show we are putting on before our National specialty nor any of our other shows as trophy prizes.

The damage this toy causes to the dogs is unnecessary and totally preventable, but your company chooses not to do anything. If you own a dog, watch how they eat, and drink, and cool themselves off, and even play. All those uses involve the tongue. “Slurping” water like a horse or a cow is not in a dog’s genetic memory. How do you expect the dogs that loose the tongues from your product to survive?

SHAME on you for purposely leaving a toy on the market that will do this to an animal.

A lawsuit would result in compensation for actual expenses related to the dog(s) in question, but nothing more. Legally, there is no value based on the pain and suffering of an animal or to the loss of a pet (beyond the financial value of said pet, depreciating with age like a vehicle).

However, let someone's dumb toddler get hold of the ball and use it as a chew toy for a couple hours and you better believe there will be an instant recall and government action. Alternately, notifying a few pet/animal organizations would get things moving as they have the resources and connections.

I'd contact the following. Once you get them aware of it and onboard, you better believe progress will be made. And at the least, it will become enough of a news item on local stations around the country that the company will have to react.

Contact your local humane society and SPCA. Contact the SPCA in a few major cities. Definitely include the one in California/San Francisco. Contact a couple main pet chains (Petco, etc) and alert them. That would get the ball rolling. Especially with your thorough documentation so readily available.

My heart goes out to you and sweet Chai. It is horrible that this happened but dogs are much more resiliant than people. I have been in the pet business almost 20 years. I had a client who had two dogs that used to board with me. When they first called they told me the story of the one dog who as a youngster got his tongue caught in a paper shredder and was completely severed off at their place of business. My point is accidents do happen but this dog who was a large breed learned to adapt on his own. He ate only can food out of a very large stainless steel bowl and then we would put down another bowl next to it filled with water and he would dip his whole muzzle in to rinse out his mouth as to not choke. It was actually amazing to see an animal so comprimised be able to overcome an obstacle as such. My prayers are with Chai that he learns the same and i am almost sure he will. I will send along my complaint to four paws as well. Good luck, hang in there, Peace.

I just crossposted your blog to several lists.

What has happened to Chai is just terrible, and how the company has responded to you is horrific.

My dog Peaches suffered at the hands of the Fort Dodge Rabies Vaccine. She developed an autoimmune disease that was diagnosed by University of Pennsylvania. I also documented everything with photo’s.

Fort Dodge (WYETH) offered me $5600. dollars to keep quiet. Also horrific.

Of course I didn’t take it and once Peaches was correctly diagnosed and correctly treated she has regained most of her health.

It cost us $12K to get the right dx because the regular DVM’s make so much money from vaccines and do not want to come forward with an accurate dx.

Thus the University Teaching Hospital who did get it right immediately after months of biopsies, steroids, MRI’s etc which showed nothing. (they make no income off vaccines).

I feel deeply for you and Chai.

Keep your chin up, Chai may pull thru and still have a good life ahead..I did e-mail the company. shame on them.

The pain he (and you) suffered emotionally and physically, is just too much to fathom. And knowing his pain continues, just tears my heart. I couldnt bear to watch the video...I had seen enough. I wrote a strong letter to the CEO. I am very active in the pet community in NYC. I emailed my contacts and colleagues. I know they will support your desire for the recall and will boycott their products until they do the right thing by you and Chai, and the general public. I asked the CEO to compensate you, as well, to help defray the medical costs and other damages that you incurred as a result of this injury. I am so very sorry this happened. Please contact a lawyer to help you get some justice for Chai. He is such a brave and handsome boy. Please him a hug for me. May God give you all the strength to endure this tragedy. You and Chai are in my prayers.

My heart goes out to you. I don't know what to say, I was just sick when I read your blog and saw the video. You're doing a great job and Chai looks to be a fast learner.

I adopted a dog that had suffered a very severe mouth injury. She was taken in by my vet after her owners abandoned her. Her tongue is fused at a permanent 90 degree angle and she has a permanent fistula at the roof of her mouth, it can easily get packed with food, also, a lot of her lips needed to be cut away.

Chai will surprise you and do well. I was surprised that after years of feeding my own girl canned food and a very small kibble, she gravitated on her own to a large kibble with no canned food. The kibble no longer falls through her mouth and the fistula doesn't get clogged. I would never have guessed to do this, she did it on her own.

I will definitely let our clients know to stay away from the pimple toy. My wish is that all dogs received the love and care that Chai does. You are a very patient and loving owner. All the best to you.

My heart just broke when I saw the struggle that your baby, Chai, was going through. At his age, all he should have to worry about is comfy spots for naps, good treats, and belly rubs. I don't know how he'll do it, but I hope he learns to adjust to his disability and is able to eat and drink for himself again. Please keep us up to date on how he is doing.

As for Four Paws, I learned about your situation from Metropolitan Maltese Rescue and was angered by their indifferent response. I have already sent an email to Allen Simon and will forward the email to everyone I know and all the groups that I am involved with. There is power in numbers!

hi....chris from brooklyn, ny here. i am keeping Chai in my prayers...my dog, Jewels looks exactly the same as Chai and my heart was breaking. These animals are not just 'pets' - they are family. And their lives are just as important as anyone else's. The insurance companies don't deny payment to the injured simply because maybe that particular 'safe car' is not involved in too many accidents. I sent the email and hope all goes well.

freeze said...

sorry the comment did not make too much sense. i was frazzled with the story....i meant the auto insurance companies basically acknowledge fault (most of the time) when their insured caused bodily injury or damage. THEY PAY. Just like this insurance company should pay. It is clear their product was the proximate cause of all Chai's injuries. Look deeper into this, sir. I am with you.

First I would like to commend you for the wonderful and loving care you are giving to your beloved pet. So many people wouldn't take the time or go through the expense. For those of us who would, seeing this is an inspiration to us all. I have written the Four Paws company and will send this alert to all my animal friends. They should pay every bill for every dog that has been injured by the toy. Don't let it drop - sue them if necessary. Chai is worth more than any amount of money they could give. They just need to be held responsible. My heart broke for Chai and for you and your family. He is beautiful and what a sweet, adorable personality. I'll be looking for updates on his healing. Cathy

Some much sadness and pain our beloved furkin have to go through. Reading the story and watching the videos bruised my soul, hurt my heart. I think the company who made the ball should pay for all of the vet expenses and the special food Chai must now eat.

Bless you both for the love and care and concern you have for your furkin. Bless you for being there for him!

I'm going to cross post on my blog which is viewed by many around the globe. The more people know about this the better.

We just adopted a Vizsla who is ball/fetch obsessive and we've been buying lots of different balls. I know we didn't buy this one but we'll be rechecking what we did buy and reviewing them for safety.

Sorry about your puppy. We wish him well.

I am sure you have explored all avenues for this - But have you tried the Consumer Product Safety Commission? If a company will not voluntarily recall an item the CPSE can for them to.

Also, I'd be curious as to who their insurance company is - My husband owns an insurance agency & has great pull with a lot of major companies due the amount of business he does with them. I am sure once he saw this story he would be more than happy to help.

I commend you for being such a great Daddy to Chai, most people wouldn't spend the money - let alone the time. Chai is a very lucky dog to have you as his human!

I cant believe that this has happened. I can, however believe that the company would refuse to remove the toy. A toddler could brake off a piece of plastic the size of their head from some toy, and it will be discontinued and recalled, but a dog has to have his tongue amputated, and nothing is done. well, i sent my email, and added some comments as well. lets see if we can get something done about this!

That is one of the saddest things I have ever heard. I can't believe someone suggested you should have put him down. Animals learn to adapt to their injuries all the time.

I see that the company is telling people that they have stopped sending this ball out...but if you go to their website, you can see that the pimple ball with bell is still for sale...don't know if it still has a hole in it (can't imagine they fixed it that fast)...but it is definately on their website.

I have an open balance with Virbac until my dog is 100% better. THEY WILL PAY FOR EVERYTHING. I emailed the company (copy and pasted your note), and guess what, the address is invalid. (surprise, surprise).

We have 13 dogs living with us at home, (yes, they all sleep inside, wherever they want) but one of our dogs, Shaggy, (old English Sheep dog crossed with a collie), loves his toys and balls, and he gets a new one every other day.

I am so sorry to hear of Chai's misfortune, and it brought me to tears hearing his painful wimpering. I wish all the best for the two of you, and things WILL get better. It will just take time, and Chai will once again be a happy, friendly, care free dog again. Sincerely, D Howlett

Horrid situation. I'm so sorry for Chai and for the pain you've had to watch him endure b/c of the negligence of this company not taking responsibility for the faulty design of their product. I've e-mailed the company as suggested as well as spread the word through all the dog channels I know, linking your moving blog so people can see and hear Chai. I'm also going to pay a visit to my local PetSmart and other pet stores to ask that they remove this product from their shelves and explain why citing your blogspot as reference for them. I hope you don't mind. Best of luck and God Bless.

Mr. Allen Simon,

I am in support of a boycott of your company until you recall the product pimple ball with bell,
as it is designed is such a way that irreparable damage can be caused by its use. As relayed by this story http://thechaistory.blogspot.com/2008/08/chai-story.html Your lack of responsibility, compassion and flat out decency is appalling. Shame on you.

At the very LEAST I would have expected your company to pay for Chai's medical expenses. In trying to save a penny, I assure you, you have cost yourself many pounds. As you know, dog owner's spend a great deal of money on their pets. Money that will no longer be directed your way or spent on your product.

Just how many 'instances' are required to get your attention? Ten? Twenty? A hundred? This is not a potentially life saving medicine with the risk of side effects. It's a BALL, a TOY and to take the attitude that more dogs need to suffer and more owners need to spend thousands of dollars before it garners your attention is disgusting.

You were foolish to underestimate the impact your companies callousness with have on your product sales. I've been forwarded the incident and have forwarded it myself and it's been posted on message boards all over the Internet. You would be well served to take action to prove the apparent lack of caring and greed on the part of your company is merely the short sighted reply of a representative and not your company's official stance on the matter..

IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS SHOULD HAPPEN to any pet or person you are taking care of (this might happen to a child, as well, for example), use your brain and quickly CUT OR PIERCE ANOTHER HOLE in the other side of the toy, to release the vacuum so that you can remove the toy BEFORE the trapped tissue swells and is deprived of too much blood and WITHOUT causing such pain (like the people with the other dog, who pulled the stupid toy off their dog's tongue TWICE in one evening while listening to her scream!). People, use your common sense! If a vacuum is causing a problem, BREAK the vacuum! You might be able to break the vacuum even by just sliding your finger or something in between the tongue (or whatever is trapped) and the object it is trapped in (if you've ever nursed a baby, you already know how this works). If this woman had simply thought to do this, her dog would have been spared all that terrible pain and would still have his tongue. Lord, I can't even think how a dog is ever going to be able to drink on its own without a tongue--and the entire painful (and expensive) situation could have been entirely avoided by a little sensible thinking! Yes, let's get this toy either fixed or off the market--but in the meantime, please also spread the word of this simple way to AVOID the horrendous injury this dog experienced needlessly, in case of similar occurrences. Thanks!

I cannot believe you would be silly enough to want a 'boycott' of a company for this situation. It sort of reminds me of the law suit for the 'hot coffee' thing! haha I am sorry your dog was injured but dear, ANYTHING can injure your dog and if you are not going to accept responsibility for the situation, well, that is just typical and I bet you would sue McDonalds for hot coffee you spilt too...

Put the dog in a cushioned box and bring it out when you want to see it and don't let any aircraft fly overhead or it might crash into your house and you can 'boycott' them too.

Are you actually limited enough to think that there aren't a few hundred other things in your household right now that would kill your dog? Sorry about his tongue but even sorrier that his owner and so many others think the TOY is to blame for the situation.

Althea said...

The irresponsibility of this company is appalling. I have sent my email and will crosspost far and wide. My heart goes out to you. I would be murderous if this happened to my Chloe or Jimmy.

Nancy said...

BTW, when I was stupid enough to allow one of my dogs to play with a handball and he dog got it caught in his windpipe and it killed him, do you think I was also stupid enough to not accept responsibility and realize that it isn't the PRODUCT but my duh that caused the problem? I used to OFTEN for the last fifty years allow my dogs to play with these balls but I realized they are too small for my breed of dogs in the first place and that I had hard chewing dogs that could break off pieces that could cause serious problems so I stopped buying them except for small, easy chewing dogs that couldn't damage them. The company can recall and you can sue them but none of that will make you any smarter... hopefully you have learned to better identify what your dogs should be allowed to play with in the future. Poor dog...

I dearly hope sweet Chai adapts well to life without his tongue, and you don't ultimately have to euthanize him due to his injuries.

I am so so sorry for both you & Chai. I am in tears for your him, and hopefully after almost two months you & he are getting along much better. I will certainly be spreading the word about this ball. I also imagine it could happen with any ball that doesn't have an air vent.

citydog said...

@nancyYes, people stupidly often let their dogs play with inappropriate objects. This toy, however, has a *design flaw*. It's Physics 101 that a hollow ball with a hole on one end is going to create suction when chewed, and it's reasonable to assume that a dog is going to chew on a ball in the course of normal, intended play with the toy. The toy is marketed as a dog toy, not as a ball for a racquet sport.

Who peed in your Cheerios this morning?

Thank you for your recent note expressing concern over the Four Paws® Pimple Ball with Bell. We were equally alarmed to learn that a dog may have injured himself while playing with this toy.

Dogs have been enjoying the Pimple Ball with Bell for more than a decade with over 500,000 units sold.

Keep going after them. They need to pay for all the loses you've had.
Sorry to go off, but companies that don't have safte products should not be in business.

Julia Priest said...

I am sorry your dog was injured, but the truth is, balls are fetch toys, not chew toys and most come with a warning not to leave them with your dog. There is no such thing as a completely safe toy you can leave with a dog that likes to chew. Dogs have died as a result of eating blankets or socks. It is very sad but when you have a dog that likes to chew, you have to monitor what he's doing. Poking something into the ball to release the vacuum would have solved the problem. It is terrible the poor dog had to suffer such a severe consequence, but simply reminding people to watch their dogs when they chew is helpful. Calling for "boycotts" just feeds the notion that other people are responsible for what happens to our pets.

Hey NANCY.

Ripping someone to shreds, I can only imagine, is your way of relieving the deep seated guilt you must feel over such a lapse of judgment.

This was NOT a hand ball, golf ball, ping pong ball, etc. it was marketing as a DOG TOY.

Did you do something stupid? Yep. I would have, however, still felt compassion for you.

Did this owner? No, he used the comapany guidelines in assuming this DOG TOY was safe. Obviously you haven't accepted the nature of your own tragedy (owner inflicted) and while that's sad, this is not the same thing.

As for cutting a hole in the end of the ball, I'd love to assume that would ocurr to me. But frankly, I'd more than likely be so freaked and afraid of injuring my dog I would also rush to the vet before taking action.

Now that it's been suggested, sure, but hindsight being 20/20, cut the guy some slack.

Don't want to boycott, don't agree, whatever. But being an ass is poorly reflective on one's character, esp. when someone is in turmoil.

Unless you enjoy kicking the downed, that is.

The number one question that I have is, as caretaker of Chai, Why did you ALLOW the ball to stay on the dogs tongue for as long as you did. Why not a simple action of opening the other side of the ball to end the suction when the incident happened. If the dogs tongue had already swollen, why was the ball on the tongue long enough for it to swell in this way. It sounds like a simple case of neglect of Chai on your part.
A little attention of Chai while he was playing could have avoided this whole situation.

wendystation said...

My email to FourPaws:
A quote from the form-letter email which you have been sending for the past 36 hours or longer says, “We have contacted customers that carry this product and have asked them to immediately return their inventory.”
When did you do this contact? I've contacted many of your suppliers in the past 12 hours, and have received feedback that my email is the FIRST they have heard of this problem.

christy said...

Granted, the product is faulty, but how could you put anything or anyone through so much pain? You almost sound like you are complaining about having to take much more care of the animal now. You chose to have the tongue amputated, but I'm sure you failed to say that the vet probably told you over and over to put the dog down. Also, you failed to mention how careless you were to let your dog play with a toy unsupervised! I don't feel sorry for you or the money that you had to pay. I feel sorry for the dog for having such a careless owner. I think you would be better off with a pet rock.

Dog Herder said...

I can only imagine how horrible this was for Chai and you to go through. I'm just so sorry this happened and I'm so glad you are helping spread the word to prevent this from happening to other dogs.

Best of luck to Chai and you and I know how resilient dogs are and he'll adjust with the love and patience you've shown him. Thank you for being his guardian and not giving up on him.

gunslinger said...

One question that I have is why did you neglect your dog during his play? Why did the ball stay on his tongue long enough for it to swell and need the attention of a vet? Why was a simple action of opening the other side of the ball not taken on your part when this first happened. Why was Chai neglected long enough for his tongue to swell inside the ball? Why was any object, ball or otherwise, that the dog could fit inside his mouth, left with him without human supervision? A little attention of Chai on your part and there would have been no tear rendering moments for you to post on your blog. Just a bit of common sense among all the emotion of the moment. Quit blaming a toy manufacture for your shortcomings in care.

For the select few of you here that want to make posts bashing the dog's owner for blaming the toy company in this situation please GIVE ME A BREAK!

This product is marketed as a dog TOY. Since dogs are not humans and therefore lack limbs it is apparent that they use their mouths to play with toys - hints the term CHEW TOY. AND since when do you need to monitor your dog every time it has a DOG TOY in it's mouth? Is this to say that while you’re at work all day you can't leave a chew toy out for your dog to play with while it is home alone for 9 hours? I don't see how this is any different than letting a baby chew on a teething ring in it's crib or play pen while you're in another room fixing dinner, doing laundry, etc. and I'm sure everyone has done that before because you ASSUME the product is safe as long as it's being used for it's actual purpose. I mean who honestly has time to sit around monitoring their dog every time they have a DOG TOY in it's mouth? Let's be realistic here. The toy has a FLAW. The company that manufactured the toy should be held responsible.

And to the person who referred to this as being like the "McDonald coffee lawsuit". I don't see how spilling hot coffee on yourself (coffee was meant to be hot and consumed by the mouth - not poured onto your lap) is even somewhat relevant to a defective toy being used the way it's MARKETED to be used (chewed on by a dog) causing severe damage to the dogs mouth. It wasn't the dogs fault. If the toy didn't have flaws this wouldn't have happened. The grown woman at McDonald SPILLED hot coffee onto herself. Apparently you don't know the different between damage caused when using a product for the correct purpose vs. using a product for other purposes.

If this company doesn't agree to pick up the $5,000 vet bill I would most definitely SUE

I have already put this on my www.AnimalsSpeak.org forum in the Health and Emergency area and I am going making it a global announcement. I am also sending it out to all my lists in a few minutes.

If I may make one suggestion to you! On my forum, I have a co-admin who is legally blind and reading white text on a black background is very difficult for those of us who are older, and almost impossible for some legally blind persons or others with sight issues, It hurts my eyes and others as well. I think a lot more would read this urgent information if the site did not have the black background and white text :)

I hope your fur baby gets past this. The videos were heart wrenching to watch and I just wanted to hug him. Poor baby. Hopefully he has learned to drink now. Have you thought about getting one of those *rabbit bottles* and attaching it to something. Perhaps that might work, due to gravity ?

Furry hugs to Chai and people hugs to you :)

Something similar occurred to one of my cats with a Sergeant's cat toy in 1995. He swalled the small ring at the end of the elastic and promptly had an intestinal blockage--and thus emergency surgery. I corresponded with Sergeant's and sent them photos etc., and they finally reimbursed me for the vet cost. Unlike your sweet dog, my cat had a full recovery and is none the worse for the wear.
If it's ok, I'll link to your post in my blog (got a dog entry coming today, anyway).
